Prince of Persia The Forgotten Sands

Just started playing it last night.

It's Prince of Persia in every respect. Plays very similar to 'Sands of Time' on the last gen consoles (its prequel).

No surprises here - which is a dissapointment tbh. Yet another sequel in a long running series where they've not evolved the game in any way. I just don't get this - the perfect way to ruin a franchise - see Tomb Raider.

BTW - am I the only one who actually really enjoyed playing the cel shaded POP? I think I remember reading it wasn't a financial success, but was it really such a poor game? I really liked it. [Shrugs]

Anway - I'm pretty sure I'll get bored of this very quickly as I've played it already seven years ago. We'll see.

  1. Got my time reverse powers last night. I like the fact that I had to play for a good hour or two before I got them - I'm a big fan of deffered mechanics in games.

Problem is though that this is the same mechanic from the original game, so there's no 'wow' factor attached to it at all.

The princes parkour skills are pretty good - the use of them came back to me very quickly. The pillar jumping, wall running - it's all done well.

I'm still waiting to see something new though.

  2. Played on and last night got the new ability to temporarily turn water into a solid.

Real strange one this. The addition of a deffered new ability is very welcome. But the problem is that this new ability allows you to change the state of something in order to allow you to perform the same actions as you've been performing from the beginning!

Basically, the game has streams & jets of water that when solidified turn into perfect pillars and rods that allow you to be able to use them in the same way that you've been using pillars and rods all along. Ok, that's not 100% true as the water change requires the holding of a button and there is a time limit. But still. I just think it's a strange way of bringing in a new mechanic.

In essence, the new power is almost made redundant by its lack of newness. Although I will say that it requires some level of skill in order to pull off some of the tricky jumps.

Not sure if I'll play on - we'll see what happens tonight. Might be in the mood for something new.

  3. Ok, so I fully intended on moving on last night, but just thoguht I'd give it a final bash before I stopped playing it. Then... Something happened.

The water freezing mechanic that I spoke about before has actually turned into a really nice mechanic with some nice tricky puzzles.

Basically, some clever clogs at Ubi thought of associating the different states of the water (frozen and liquid) with the princes movement through the level! So you'll freeze water & jump on a rod, but are then faced with a frozen water wall, so you have to jump off the rod, release the trigger in a split second, which changes the frozen water back to liquid thus allowing the prince to jump through! Really nice!

It can get really tricky at times, but the timing based puzzles are very rewarding when you get them right and they've done a good job of mixing it up with blends of real rods, pillars and walls with liquid rods, pillars and walls and the switching between frozen and liquid states.

Definately bought itself a stay of execution and I'll play on for now.

  4. Reached the observatory last night. Nice little room. The puzzle isn't too taxing (unfortunatley, they don't have many puzzle mechanics and they're mostly based on turning winches). Anyway, this room has a huge machine in it that you change by turning winches - you need to turn them and align platforms so you can get across to the other side - nice.
