Dead to Rights: Retribution

Bad start - you kick off playing as the dog in a tutorial level where you just run and attack baddies. Nice idea (hero guy is on the floor, almost dead and the dog has to protect him), but badly implimented - it doesn't play that well tbh. The next level doesn't even include the dog so what was the point? Is the dog really that important and that interesting to the game? Not for me.

When you get into it, it has good and bad points. You need to get into your head that ammo is in very short supply and much of the combat is hand to hand, leading to weapons combat (by stealing enemies weapons). I quite like the idea of this, but suprise, suprise, the hand to hand isn't great - infact, it's pretty poor.

Still playing - just.

My quote of choice from the Gameshark review:
"I’m only recommending this game to the patient—desperate for something they’ve experienced before."

  2. Played a bit more last night. Found a perfect example of rubbish story telling in video games

(FYI - the exceptionally poor quality of story telling and dialogue in video games is a real bug bear of mine).

    !!SPOILEER ALERT!!
So you meet your father in level 3. He's an ageing cop with a reputation for decency. He gets killed at the end.

Fail #1. Why introduce a new major character and then kill him off in the same level you introduced him? Ever heard of story pacing? No, you haven't.

The cut scene where he dies is just so amaturish. The hero dude kind of loses it - but the acting doesn't work because of the lack of facial expressions on his face - makes it look very last gen.

He calls in for assistance on the radio screaming 'officer down'! Erm. This came at the end of a very violent level which was more like a war zone with cops getting shot all over the place?! Nobody seemed to think about calling in help for the others no?

Ok, so this one single ambulance arrives (again - in the middle of a huge battle). The amulance arrives, the medic knows both main characters and they can't save thedad.

All emotion in this scene is just lost. The mix of poor story telling, over emotional VO and limited animation as well as the holes mentioned above make what could have been a very emotional scene just another cut scene in just another game.. Shame.
